THE PRICE of A GIFT

Bruce Gross, Ph.D., J.D., M.B.A., DAPA

The giving and receiving of gifts as a simple expression of gratitude and affection isn’t so simple when it occurs in the context of a therapeutic relationship. Unlike other areas of possible violation of professional ethics violations, there are no laws specifically regulating the exchange of gifts between therapist and client. Even in the most extreme cases, the giving of gifts between therapist and client is generally an ethical issue or conflict rather than a legal one.

Annals is Expanding

One major change you will be seeing beginning in 2025 is the conversion of the Annals from a bimonthly to a quarterly publication. The editorial board is in general agreement that a quarterly publication is more appropriate for a scholarly publication. However, the size of the journal, which is currently 36 pages in length, will be extended to 52 pages. This will allow us to add more continuing education articles in each issue and also improve the quality and content of the journal. With the new quarterly schedule, you will be receiving your issues of the Annals in this order:

  • Spring issue: Approximately March 7th
  • Summer issue: Approximately June 2nd
  • Fall issue: Approximately September 5th
  • Winter issue: Approximately December 1st

The American Psychotherapy Association would like to extend its condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Senator Paul Wellstone (D-MN), a true crusader in the fight for mental health parity. I was fortunate to personally hear Senator Wellstone’s passionate speech at the Mental Health Parity Now Rally at our nation’s Capitol on June 6, 2025.

In upcoming issues of Annals we will be running a four-part series on mental health insurance equality from four different perspectives: from mental health professionals and patients to members of Congress and American businesses that are directly related to the issue of mental health parity.

Emotional Effects of Terrorism on Children

Annals interviewed American Psychotherapy Association member, Barbara Harling, Ph.D., concerning some of the reactions to the terrorist attacks she’s witnessed from children and adults. Dr. Harling is the Director of Adult Mental Health Services at the Center for Mental Health in Washington, D.C. The Center for Mental Health provides counseling services for children who are raised by grandparents or family members, as well as support groups, referrals, consultations and other information to the kinship families themselves.
